Listening to David without fidgeting, Shinkan shifts her sight between the waitress and him. She can't help the quite smile that tilts her lips up slightly when her diner partner holds up the menu so that she can see it as well. It's these small gestures that really make her feel special when she's with David. Hearing the order, her grin widens, for she'd wanted the Miso and likes Udon as well. But she's a bit puzzled about the last one. Tonkatsu, was it? She's never heard of it.
Curious, the silver haired girl waits for David to finish up with the order and for the waitress to leave. Once it was simply the two of them alone, her companion turns to her and asks her a question.
"I hope that's alright with you."
Nodding her head, she writes upon her pad. Middle food? She hopes he understands, because she doesn't know how to spell the unknown dish he'd ordered, in either language that floats in her head. Expression curious, she looks at David questioningly and somewhat expectantly, waiting for his answer.

David read what she wrote. "Huh? ... Middle food?" he thought about it for a second, rubbing him chin with his thumb and index finger. "Miso, tonka... Oh! Tonkatsu." It had dawned on him what is was she meant.
"Well," he started, "tonkatsu is breaded, and fried pork cutlets." He gave her a slightly side long glace. He couldn't help but admire her. She was very cute, especially when she had that look of curiosity on her face. "It's very good. You should try some when it gets here."
It was becoming more apparent that for every mystery of Shinkan's he managed to figure out, a multitude more became visible. He didn't mind much though. David enjoyed her company, and had this feeling that everything would come to light in time. Until then, he would just try to be around.
But there was something else a little more pressing on his mind at the time, and he couldn't help but wonder. Could this be counted as a date?

Watching David closely, the silver haired girl realizes that her sparse wording has confused him a bit. Trying to think of another way of asking her question, her thoughts are broken into when her dinner partner gives a sudden "Oh!"
Blinking in surprise, Shinkan listens quietly as he explains what tonkatsu is. Hmm... that doesn't sound too bad... When David suggests her tasting it, she gives a soft smile and nod. She's not adverse to trying new things, especially since most things were new for her anyway.
Gazing quietly at her companion, she can't help but grin a bit as he speaks. He's a quiet person, much different the the wild and rambunctious personality of Skye. In several ways, he reminds her of Saku, but David's quiet is more a gentle listening than the ninja's silent calculations. Still, they both have that... caring streak. They also both have the same habit of their cheeks turning red at one thing or another. At the thought, her smile widens, and her eyes sparkle with humor. But then her thoughts are interrupted.
From across the room, to their left, a loud bought of laughter erupts from a the large group of people sitting there. Most of them are male and dressed in dark business suits, which is odd, because this is a small village which doesn't have any need or place for those kinds of people. Turning her head, Shinkan stares at them, that ever present curiosity glinting in her slates.
Who are they? They sure are loud. Why do they seem so happy? Still watching them, she observes how they all have small cups that one man keeps continuously filling up. They're all drinking from them, quite a bit, even the refiller. Some of them have flushed faces and others are waving their hands all about as they talk.
Turning to David, she writes down the question that'd popped into her head at the sight of the bottle and clay cups.
What are they drinking? Is it good?
To her, the way the were drinking the unknown liquid, it had to be good. Also, it seemed to be one of the main reasons the men were happy. If it made them happy, then it had to be good, right? Would it make me that happy? she wonders, her curious eyes drifting back to David.

Shinkan seemed happy with David's explanation, and even seemed willing to try it. This of course pleased David. Had he already not been smiling ear to ear; he probably would have smiled even a bit bigger.
Unfortunately he kind of felt like he was out of things to explain. It left a feeling of tension in the air for him, but one he was easily able to overlook. Besides a little quiet, or at least quiet at his table, wouldn't hurt anything. But then he noticed Shinkan's eyes shifting to the very disturbance, he had been trying to avoid. The businessmen, he assumed, had gotten themselves very drunk, and very boisterous... Very quickly.
He had taken note of them come in, they arrived not long after the silver haired girl and himself. As expected they drank freely. Apparently Japan did not have the same courtesies regarding drunks in public, and the men never seemed to be cut off.
Of course Shinkan then broke the, proverbial, silence. What are they drinking? Is it good? She asked him. David leaned back for a second trying to think of the best ways to answer the question.
David's expression changed to a flat look, giving him more of a 'matter of fact' look on this face"Well, you see..." He started, "It's sake. Alcohol. They're just getting drunk. I don't know if you would like it. It tends to have a somewhat bitter taste, and it can be pretty rough. The people that do like it tend to 'aquire' the taste for it. As far as making you happy, I dunno. What kind of drunk are you? Happy, sad, or angry?
"Besides..." A sheepish grin slid onto his face, "Aren't I making you happy?" He chuckled a bit as he finished the statement.
