David lowered the note from his face and stared down at the stack of boxes. He wasn't really sure whether to be happy or sad. He'd been waiting on the rest of the stuff that he had shipped from home, but three flights of stairs meant a lot trips with this much stuff. He bgan taking a mental count of the four stacks of boxes. 'Ten. Yeah they're all here. That's one relief.'
He smiled as he looked at the note. "Well it was pretty nice for the staff to let me know they were hear anyhow."
He walked over to the first stack of boxes, and set the note on top of one. Then he picked it up, and set it aside. All of the boxes were the same size, and they were big, prefect three foot by three foot by three foot cubes. He set the box down gently, and knelled next to it. His hand went into his pocked and pulled out a blue, metal handled pocket knife. With a quick flick of his wrist the blade snapped open. Three quick cuts was all it took to sever the plastic tape. Then he folded the blade, and put the knife away.
David pulled back the flaps and peered inside the case. "Great look like it's all here. Time to get it upstairs I guess."
With that he stood, and began getting ready for the annoying task ahead of him.

Stepping silently down the hallway, Shinkan glances around her. She'd been told by one of the elder maids that a new occupant has just arrived and that he may need some help moving in. She'd been told where he was with instructions to help him out to the best of her abilities. The old woman had also given her a note, informing the new person that he could send her out to get more help if it is needed; such as with moving large furniture or heavy items about.
Keeping to her quiet pace, the silver haired girl comes the a bend in the hallway. She's dressed simply, in a worn pair of beige slacks, an old white men's shirt tucked into it, and a pair of thin, wooden sandals. Over all of that is a large, dingy gray apron, with several large pockets on the front. The Inn has a maids uniform, but they didn't have anything her size and had to order one in. For now, she's been outfitted in the Inn Keepers extra clothes, although they're a bit baggy on her smaller, thinner frame. Her long hair is tied back in a low pony tail, a few strands floating about her face as she moves.
Rounding the bend, she instantly spots the large pile of boxes scattered all about the hallway. In the center of it all stands a man, his back turned to her and hunched over one of the boxes. Taking in a deep breathe, she lets it out slowly and then approaches him. She's nervous, for she doesn't know what kind of person he is. So, cautiously she moves, and when she nears him, she hesitantly reaches out a hand and taps him on the shoulder; her other hand preoccupied with holding the note.

"DAHH!"
David flinches and jumps upward a bit, obviously startled. He leans back over the boxes and takes a deep breath. placing his right hand on his chest he looks behind him.
"Please don't do tha..." His words trail off as his eyes level with a pair of breast. He looked up to see them connected to a very pretty face. His face however was already turning a shade of bright pink. Quickly he stood an turned. He looked down at the girl, and was amazed at how he towered over her. she couldn't have been more then five, maybe five and a half, feet tall; at the most.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap at you, but you startled me." He took in a good look at her this time. She was very pretty, but her clothes defiantly didn't fit her... at all. She should have been wearing something pretty, but instead she was in hand-me-downs from a boy that was almost as tall as David himself. Suddenly he wondered if there was even anyone that tall in Japan. Most of the time he stuck out like a sore thumb.
A look of surprised crossed his face. "ACK! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to stare. My names David. What's yours?"

Flinching in shock at the other's shout, Shinkan takes a few hasty steps back, her heart beating rapidly in her chest. A look of fear flits across her features when he swiftly turns and peers up at her, but at the embarrassed look on his face, added to the bright pink painting his cheeks, it vanishes.
When he rises from his crouch, she takes a few more steps back, apprehension darting through her. He's so tall... But his appology and overall friendly attitude allows her to brush it aside. So, instead, she tilts her head up and to the side, gazing into his eyes. He seems a bit flustered, although the reason why eludes her. Nervousness begins to eat away at her when he continues to stare at her without saying anything and she takes another half-step back, unsure about this strange person. But, before she can turn her step into a full blown retreat, (at the risk of a scolding from the Elder maid), the boy speaks.
"ACK! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to stare. My names David. What's yours?"
Taken by surprise, the silver haired girl pauses and blinks a few times. Suddenly, she glances all around, unable to meet David's eyes. Ah, um... ah... what to do, what to do? All of a sudden, she recalls the note in her hand. Blushing lightly, she abruptly holds it out to him, her slates shifted to the side and away from his face in her embarrassment. She still hasn't said a word, yet, although if David realizes this or not, she doesn't know.

David watched and took note of every change of facial expression. It didn't take long to realize that a guy of his size probably scared the crap out of her. "I'm really, really sorry. I promise I'm a nice guy."
then she pushed the note toward him. He'd noticed it before, but didn't think about it. He couldn't help but worry that it might be something bad. After all, people just don't walk up and give you letters right along with the silent treatment. He had the biggest, stupidest, simle on his face; as reached out and took the letter. He held it up for a second trying to decipher it. His Japanese was good, even if he couldn't shake the accent, but reading was a different story. He wasn't illiterate in it, but it was far from natural too.
"Tyler-san" he read aloud, "This girl is Shinkan. She will be able to help you with moving your things up to your room. If not she will be able to fetch someone who can."
David looks down at her for a bit. "Huh, sounds good to me."
He handed the note back to her. "Well then, Shinkan, why don't you grab that one over there." He pointed to one of the still stacked boxes, "And we'll head up there." He thought for a second, then added, "You don't have to be so quiet you know. I'm really sorry about snapping at you."

Holding the note out, Shinkan hesitantly gives David a sideways glance at his appology and promise. ... A nice guy... Now that she's got a chance to actually get a good look at him, he doesn't seem like the type to do anything untoward to her. Turning to face him directly, she gives a small smile and nod when he reads the letter out loud and mentions her name. Good, she wrote that in there for me... The Elder maid was usually always prepared for most anything, or as far as Shinkan has been able to tell. This way, it's much easier than introductions and much faster to boot.
Then David directs his blue-eyed gaze onto her and simply stares at her for a few long moments, not saying a word. Shifting uneasily in place, the silver haired girl decides to keep her sight on him, instead of looking away. This way, she'll be able to see all he does... just in case.
But soon enough, he breaks from his statue routine and hands her the note back. Taking it, she tucks it away in one of her apron's many pockets. Following where he points, she gives another nod and heads over to the box. Just as she's reaching out for it, David speaks.
"You don't have to be so quiet you know. I'm really sorry about snapping at you."
Freezing in place, Shinkan slowly turns to face him once again. Hands clasped before her, she glances down at them, unable to look up. Well, he would have found out sometime anyways... Taking a deep breathe, she peers up into his eyes, her own slates dark with worry and a touch of unease. Giving a somewhat strained smile, she raises her left hand and lifts her chin. Keeping her stare strong, she lightly taps her throat and then shakes her head. Wanting him to not miss out on what she's trying to tell him, she repeats the motion and then drops her hand back down to the other one. Dropping her chin, she gazes up at him, her cheeks touched with a light pink of embarrassment. She probably should have informed him of her inability to speak right off the bat, but she likes to have people treat her as if she's able to talk, at least for a short while. Most people that have learned that she can't speak always treats her different from the others, as if her lacking in that ability also made her lacking in other areas.

David stacked the box he had set on the floor back on top of the one he had pulled it off from.He looked over at Shinkan just in time for their eyes to lock. The look on her face was unmistakable. Slight frown, ends of the eyebrows drooping ever so slightly, dark coloring in her slate eyes; all pointed to disappointment and worry. David was starting to formulate something in his head. Maybe she really was completely scared of him.
Then she smiled. Fake... she's forcing it. David knew smiles, if he knew anything, and seeing one that wasn't real always cut him a little. He started chewing the inside of his lip. It was an old habit of his, and he always did it when something made him sad or worried. That smile had definitely done both. Someone as pretty as Shinkan should never do anything but smile. Then again, in his opinion, no one should ever do anything but smile.
He watched intently; as she raised her head. She taped her throat and then shook her head. At first he didn't get it, as his eyes were locked with hers. Her gaze was so focused, so strong, that it felt like something more was under the surface. He could see deep enough there was something more there. Then again, maybe he was right about the jet lag. He hadn't had a lot of rest since arriving in Japan.
"Oh." he replied, but when she did it again it obviously sank home "OHHHH...." Suddenly he felt like a real jerk. She hadn't been brushing him off. She just couldn't say anything. Well it seemed her slight disability was a touchy thing at best. Probably just a good idea to acknowledge it then let it be. After all, voice is only a small part of the person. Sad though, he was thinking she might have had a nice one to hear.
David quickly recovered, and his pure smile jumped back on his face. "I see. Well don't worry about it." He reached down and lifted his two boxes with relative ease. "Just grab one of those if you can. If it's too heavy, why don't you just keep me company while I move them." He let out a small laugh. "It's so dull to do things by yourself."

Staring at David nervously, Shinkan tilts her head slightly to the left when he doesn't seem to understand at first. But he eventually gets it as a drawn out "Ohhhh" sounds out. Here it come..., she thinks glumly, waiting for the change in treatment that usually comes after. But instead, he gives a pure, open smile and tells her to not worry about it.
Blinking in surprise, it takes the silver haired girl a few moments before his words and actions sink in. He... doesn't mind? Even that I didn't let him know right off? Suddenly, she smiles at him, a genuine one that lights up her round face and brightens her soft slates. True delight flits through her, for he not only seems to not care, but it seems like he wants her to stay around! Nodding her head cheerfully, all her fear, uncertainty and meekness vanishes. Turning back around to the box she'd been aiming for, she bends slightly to pick it up.
It's heavy; not enough to prevent her from lifting it, though. But still, it's a bit of a struggle, for her strength hasn't fully returned from her weakened state; although she's much stronger than she had been when she'd first arrived at the Inn. Turning back to face David, the box cradled in her arms, she spots the two boxes that he has. The ease with which he lifts them and maneuvers them about surprises her. So she stands there, mouth slightly agape, simply staring at him. Wow... strong...
