It didn't tale much convincing for David to get the head maid to give Shinkan a little time for lunch. He didn't find it a little weird how she acted though. Almost like he was picking the girl up for a date, and she was the over protective mother. He brushed it off, though and got ready to enjoy a good meal with good company.
He'd decided to head into the village, figuring he'd be spending way too much time at the restaurant near Hakkyou, later, anyhow. knowing he was on a bit of a time constraint, for Shinkan's sake, he found a place rather quickly.
One of the locals had been nice enough to recommend it. Saying it was a good place to take a young lady. He was really starting to wonder what was with some of the people out here. It seemed he couldn't do much of anything without being seen as one step short of a lecher.
He blew it off as they walked up to the door of the restaurant. He opened the door to let Shinkan in, somewhat happy to be off the street, finally. As he followed her in his eyes went wide, and he stopped at the door.
He looked around and quickly realized there were no chairs! instead there were the little pillows, the names of which he couldn't remember, for kneeling, or sitting cross legged. He wasn't sure if he was limber enough for this.
But it was too late to back out, as the hostess spoke up. "Welcome. Would you like to be seated?"

In truth, Shinkan had been rather surprised that David had been able to so easily convince the Elder maid to let her go on an unorthodox lunch break. Not saying that the Elder was mean or anything like that. No, she was just strict about duties and the workplace was all. But today she seemed quite happy to see the silver haired off with some guy. Confused about this, but grateful too, she simply allowed David to lead her away.
She hadn't felt any need to change, so shes pretty much dressed the same way, minus the over large apron. But, she doesn't mind, not at all, for the clothes she's wearing is quite comfortable. She'd been surprised, though, when they'd taken the path to town. She's not had many opportunities to visit the large village, so any chance she gets always makes her happy.
So now she walks next to David, cheerfully drinking in all of the sites around her. The scenery, the buildings, and all the people. It's all so much! She's always taken in by it all, each time she comes, so when her companion stops to ask questions, she doesn't mind, for this only gives her more of a chance to look around.
David seems to get the information he's looking for, because they arrive not too long after the initial questioning at a restaurant. She knows its one because of the delightful smells floating on the air. Stepping past the doorway before David enters, Shinkan halts in place, her eyes darting everywhere. Woa... She's heard of these 'traditional' restaurants from Ryoku, but she's never actually been to one. Excitement taking hold of her, the silver haired girl gives a cheerful grin, her soft slates sparkling with energy. Just then, a woman comes up and asks them a question.
"Welcome. Would you like to be seated?"
Nodding her head, Shinkan gives a small bow and takes hold David's hand. She'd been somewhat instructed on how to behave in a restaurant by the Inn Kepper. Smiling happily, she tugs at the other's hand, indicating that they should follow the lady.

David is snapped out of his train of thought, when he feels someone grab his hand. He looks down and realizes Shinkan slight tugging on him. His eyes trace back up her arm, and land on her face. He knows it's too late to get out, when he see her practically glowing. His feet move forward, following the girl and the hostess. And soon they are at their table.
Now for the real issue... He'd have to actually sit down. It was the gentlemanly thing to pull the chair out for a lady, but these weren't exactly chairs, so he just waited till Shinkan was seated, and then took his own. He lowered himself slowly to make sure he didn't lose his balance. His face turning a little red, when he realized how strange he must look.
He picked up the menu, and began to read. Then he glanced over the top of it at Shinkan, and said with a smile, "So, you seem to be enjoying yourself."

Following behind the waitress, Shinkan glances all around her. Being surrounded by so many people always gives her an odd sense of excitement and unease. She rarely ever leaves Hakkyou Inn and the few instances that she had were mostly excursions out in the woods and mountains surrounding the place. The few times that she has gone to town had been interesting ones; the first time being with Ryoku. Just thinking about the pale Inn Keeper sends a mixture of joy and confusion through her. She'd been the one who found her the night the silver haired girl staggered up to the Inn and she'd been the one who had taken the injured girl in and saved her. All she really remembers from that night was being extremely cold, in lots of pain, and the shock of staring up into those intense, electric blue eyes...
Shaking those memories from her head, she takes a seat where the waitress indicates and then watches as David sits down after her. He seems a bit unsteady at the decent and she gets the distinct impression that he's not used to this type of seating style. Truth be told, neither was she, as far as her experiences at the Inn came it; as far as she remembers. Yet she sinks easily into the cushion, her movements fluid and practiced, as if she's always done this.
Looking away to give David time to recover from his embarrassment, Shinkan finds herself once again watching the people around her. Waiters and waitresses bustle around the busy place, moving from table to table and taking orders. Customers chat, smile, and laugh (often boisterously) all around the warm room. The place has a festive air about it and the silver haired girl can't help the small smile takes hold of her lips. Her sight is pulled away though, when David directs a question at her.
"So, you seem to be enjoying yourself."
Blinking, Shinkan returns her attention back to her companion, her slates shinning with enthusiasm. Nodding her head, she takes up her notepad, which she's rarely without these days, and writes down. So many people!

David couldn't help himself. The sheer enthusiasm, and innocence in that statement got the better of him, and he laughed. Loud, and hard, he laughed. When he caught his breath, he replied, "Yeah there are. Everyone has to eat, you know. So I assume lunch is a pretty big attraction at a place like this."
A smile covered his face. That had really made his day. He was starting to understand one of the things that he enjoyed, and intrigued him, about Shinkan. It was like she was experiencing everything for the first time. There was just a wide eyed wonderment about her.
Without a warning, he snatched the top sheet off her pad, and wrote something on it as fast as he could. Then folded it, before, he hoped, she got a chance to see it. He put his forearm over it to hold it down. Then he looked back up at her. "So decided what you want to have?"

When David begins to laugh, Shinkan can't help but smile in return. She's unsure why he's laughing, but it's so infectious that she's hard pressed to repress her own reaction to it. So her smile flows freely and easily across her face, open and filled with the simple enjoyment of the sound.
His smile is so nice... the silver haired girl thinks, watching David as he finally catches his breathe. She nods her head in understanding at his explanation. She doesn't know why she'd never thought of it before, but his explanation does make sense.
She'd set the pad to the side once she'd showed her companion what she'd written on it. Wanting to know what had amused the other so much that it got him laughing, Shinkan was about to reach over to write her question down when David suddenly leans forward and snatches up the top sheet of her pad. It's so unexpected that all she can do is watch in shock as the other scribbles something on the page, shielding it with his body.
Her hand lies on top of her notepad, for she'd reacted to the snatch without thought, her hand snapping over to the pad to prevent him from doing whatever he was about to do. But she'd been a hair too late and he'd gotten the page. She doesn't realize that that's what had happened though, and in fact doesn't even take note that her hand had moved. The only thing that would bring her attention to her unconscious action would've been if she'd actually grabbed hold of David's arm or if he directly brings her attention to it. That is, if he even notices her small, yet extremely fast, movement.
Shaking off her surprise, Shinkan's expression takes on a curious twinkle. Leaning forward, she tries to get a peek at what David had written, but not even a stray mark escapes the other's blocking arm. Sinking back down in her seat, she shakes her head at the other's question. In fact, she's not even had a chance to look over the menu; not that she'd understand much that's written on it anyway. Trying to put off the struggle that would eventually be her trying to read the menu, she points to the slip of paper held down by David's forearm and throws the other a questioning look. This look is posing two questions: Why did he take the sheet in the first place and What did he write on it? She'll write them down for further clarification, but first she wants to see if he'll understand what she's asking without words. It's much easier, at least to her, if she can communicate successfully without the use of the pad. Easier and faster.

As David sees the girls response, it isn't hard to figure out what she means. Truth be told; David wasn't completely sure why he did it, himself. But it had seemed like the best idea at the time. though when he saw her hand go over the pad, he did realize that he might have accidentally violated her space. He just hoped she wouldn't be offended by it.
What's done is done though. So it would be best to continue with the idea he had come up with in the first place. His smile became somewhat sly, and he responded to the unspoken question. "Well, for now, that's a secret. But you'll see later, I promise."
He hoped that would work for now. He was actually getting a little nervous about what he did. He chewed the back of his lip for a second, then looked back to the menu. Obviously trying to change the subject, he said, "Hm... Now what looks good today?"

Tilting her head to the side at David's rather evasive response, Shinkan gives a reluctant nod. She wants to know! Curiosity, it seems, is a trait that she's got much of. But... he did say he'd show me later... I guess I can wait. Patience, though, seems to balance out that rather fickle trait.
Giving another soft nod, this time in definite agreement, she frowns when the other chews the back of his lip. It's a small, yet obvious gesture. She's not known David for very long, but in the short time that she has, she's come to recognize that movement as a sign of worry or nervousness. He'd done it a lot when they'd first met in the hallway and later when they were in his room. Why is he so nervous? She wonders, her slates questioning, yet he shouldn't know what she's thinking about, for it doesn't pertain to anything they'd been talking about previously. Am I... hard to be around?
Trying to distract herself from those worrisome thoughts, Shinkan goes along with the obvious change in subject. Glancing down at her menu, she picks it up and begins to scan it over. She can't read much of what's on it, so she simply looks at the pictures, trying to pick out what's good through the images she sees. Despite the pictures, though, a small frown of frustration works it's way into her expression. Why can I only read some of this? Did the knowledge vanish with my voice? Why can't I remember? Unconsciously, a small sigh escapes her, even as she continues to look over the menu.

David subconsciously relaxed a bit, figuring he had dodge his mistake, at least for the time being. He was starting to get pretty hungry just trying to have the conversation, so he had begun looking through the menu pretty intently. Then he heard a sigh escape from Shinkan.
He looked up to see the problem, but it didn't take him long to figure it out. If she could have wore a hole through the menu with the eyes, she probably would have. It was obvious the girl was having a bit of trouble. He let his eyes drop back to his own menu and tried to pretend he hadn't noticed. After a second; he looked up again. with a smile, and a cheerful voice he said, "If you need any help, all you have to do is ask."

Glaring darkly at the menu spread before her, Shinkan looks up in surprise as David's cheerful offer breaks her frustrated concentration. Giving an embarrassed and somewhat shy smile the others way, she slowly nods in agreement. Writing on her pad, she shows him the one words she wrote. Please.
Her frustration mainly stems from the feeling that she should know how to read the symbols before her, yet she is unable to. This feeling is strong and persistent, only agitating her when she needs to read the writing of the area she's found herself.
Peering hopefully at David, she raises a hand and points to the image of a bowl of steaming soup. She doesn't know what kind of soup it is, only that it looks good and warm to her.

David blinked for a second, and his smile fell to a more indifferent state. He cocked his jaw to the side a bit, and a look that was almost disbelief crossed his face. This girl had been writing so well to communicate that entire time, but she was having trouble with such basic foods as the one she had pointed out to him.
He settled back on his legs. They were starting to go numb, folded under him, as they were. Word's kept flashing in his mind. He knew that Shinkan was sincere, but it almost felt like she might be trying to play with him. He felt bad about drawing out the silence he was letting permeate the area, and knew it was probably making her uncomfortable.
The smile began to return to his face. He needed and excuse to change his position, and David defiantly thought he had just found one. He placed his hand on the table, and used it for leverage. Slowly he lifted himself up. As he rose he pulled the paper that had been under him arm into his other palm. Once he reached him feet there was a real feeling of relief. The blood rushed back to his feet, and he was only left with the tingling sensation that numbness brings.
He slipped the paper into him pocket, and began to step around the table. He got next to the girl, and lowered himself into a new seating position. This time he crossed his legs, rather than sitting on him. for him; it was far more comfortable, and easier to manage.
He picked up the menu and began to read it off to her. "This is Miso soup. It's made by mixing miso paste into dashi. It looks like they serve it here with negi and tofu in it. It's good, but it doesn't really make a meal."
He looked toward Shinkan, and just realized what his excuse had accomplished. His cheeks began to flash red when he realized he was right next to her. "I..is there anything else that l...looks good?"

Watching David closely, apprehension takes hold of her when his expression changes. What's he thinking?, she wonders, worry making her hands take hold of a napkin on the table and begins to twist it about her fingers. She can read and write, to an extent. But, it was all in the most simple of symbols and forms, anything harder or of a higher degree of learning comes up as a frustrating blank for her. She writes in an odd mix of English and Japanese, using one for the other when she doesn't know the words she wants to use. Still, in both languages she has that strange knowledge that she should know the words and sentence structures. So she writes simply and concisely, her sentences short and sometimes stilted because she can't recall how to read, much less write, these unknown sections. She just can't, for the life of her, find them in her mind. It must be where my voice is..., she thinks sadly, Who am I? The same odd pang of fear and a sense of danger that comes with that thought slips through her once again.
In her nervousness, she's already torn her first napkin to pieces and made a little pile out of the remains. Just as she's reaching for the second one, David's smile slowly returns to his face. Fingers stilling in their picking, Shinkan peers questioningly at her companion as he rises from his seat and sinks down next to her.
Instead of sitting down with legs folded beneath him, he crosses his legs. She'd noticed how uncomfortable he'd seemed, but he hadn't said anything, so she'd simply let it be. Wondering why he'd not changed position earlier when he'd first started fidgeting about, the silver haired girl's attention is pulled away when David suddenly leans over next to her, menu in hand.
He begins to speak softly, describing what she is unable to read. He's close to her, his shoulder bumping softly into her own, his head bowed close to her. She can smell him, a nice, clean scent, reminiscent of the outdoors. Unconsciously, a small smile tilts the edges of her lips up. A good, honest scent...
David's voice falls silent and Shinkan glances up at him to see why. He's looking at her, his cheeks burning with a reddish hue. Oh! She's seen people blush before, and has even experienced it herself a few times, when she was feeling embarrassed or ashamed, but she couldn't think of why he'd be feeling those particular emotions at this moment. In a very flustered manner, her lunch partner stutters out his questions.
She can't help it, her grin widens. Wow, he's red! Raising her right hand, curiosity and laughter dancing in her eyes, she presses her index finger against his cheek. Drawing it back, she watches at the white mark she left behind fills out once again to red. Shaking slightly, she laughs, her soft slates sparkling with her amusement.
Her laugh is silent, but it's not hard to see that that's what she's doing. Wiping away a few stray tears with the same hand she'd used to poke David with, she shakes her head in answer to his question. Still a little breathless from that unexpected bout of good humor, the silver haired girl then points to the miso soup and nods her head. This sounds fine to me. She's still smiling, a soft, happy expression that's not often seen on her.

"eh..." David's stuttering, and all speaking for that matter, just suddenly stopped when Shinkan put her finger against his cheek. His face went even another shade brighter, and he all but froze in place. He just wasn't used to being this close to a girl. Sure it had happened once or twice, but it had always been fleeting. He had never had time to really think on it till after the fact, but this time his mind was racing. He was trying to figure out more or less how he got into the situation, rather than what it might be.
He could feel her presence from this close though. It was warm and calming. She had busted up laughing at him, and it was almost a childlike energy coming off from her. He couldn't help himself, and slowly began to laugh as well. It started with a chuckle, and then another. Bit by bit it rose to a full laugh, as he tried to stifle it and not to make too big a scene in the restaurant.
When they both began to calm down, he noticed her wiping the tears from her face. He had to hold back another bout of laughter by looking down and rubbing the back of his neck. Man that was unexpected. He looked back over to the girl next to him. He was still a little flushed, but he'd mostly calmed down. He watches her point to the soup and nod.
"Well alright, if that's what you want." I'd better order a little on the heavy side for myself there's no was that soup could fill her up.. He raised his hand in the air, as the waitress passed. "Excuse me? Miss? We're ready to order here."

David's expression was priceless. He was clearly shocked, his eyes slightly wider than normal and his words simply trailing off. She didn't think it was possible, but his face turns an even darker shade of red. Then he begins to laugh.
It rolls from him, deep, warm, and so filled with good humor that she can't help but laugh along with him. It's obvious that he's trying to keep the volume down, but it's still a good, loud laugh. Shinkan notices that several people in the area are glancing over at them, their expressions varying from curious to annoyed, but she doesn't care. She's having a good time and that's all that really matters to her.
Wiping away at her tears, she pauses, trying to catch her breath. She'd laughed so hard that her stomach muscles were aching, but it was a good ache. Glancing sideways at her lunch partner, she catches the way he rubs his neck in an almost sheepish fashion. She can't help but smile at the movement. Ah, that felt good... Really, she can't remember when she'd smiled so much. In fact, her face was hurting a little bit from the unusual use of muscle. But she just can't seem to stop grinning.
David notices her choice and nod and he turns to call a waitress over to order. She watches the waitress approach them and simply leaves the ordering up to her companion, for she knows that it'd be quicker and easier.

The waitress stops and smiles at the two of them. "Yes, what would you like today?"
David held up the menu so that it still faced him, but the girl could easily see. He then pointed to the first item he was about to list off. A precaution to make sure there was no confusion. "Yes we would like the Miso Soup," his finger moved down the menu some. "The Tonkatsu," and then a little more, "And some Udon."
He folded the menu and handed it back to here, with a big thank you. With the food ordered he felt a bit of relief. He was starting to get quite hungry, and the little scene with Shinkan just now had, inadvertently, prolonged the foods arrival. Then again, he was kind of enjoying himself as well.
The waitress began to leave, and with a smile he looked back over to the girl next to him. "I hope that's alright with you." He beamed to her.
